Merkel says EU cannot completely rely on US and Britain any more

German chancellor tells election rally in Munich that Europe must take its fate into its own hands after ‘unsatisfactory’ G7 talks

Europe can no longer completely rely on its traditional British and American allies, Angela Merkel has warned, saying the EU must now be prepared to “take its fate into its own hands”.

Putin hardens Moscow’s support of Syria regime before Tillerson visit

Russian president claims Assad’s opponents intend to carry out false-flag chemical attacks to justify more US strikes

Vladimir Putin has deepened his support of the Syrian regime, claiming its opponents planned false-flag chemical weapon attacks to justify further US missile strikes.

Donald Tusk re-elected as European council president

Former Polish PM wins second term with support from almost all EU countries, but in teeth of fierce opposition from Warsaw

Donald Tusk has won a second term as European council president, overcoming bitter opposition from Poland that soured the mood of an EU summit in Brussels.

Tusk, a former Polish prime minister, was re-elected with overwhelming support to lead the European council, the body that organises EU leaders’ meetings, for a second term lasting two and a half years. His reappointment until the end of 2019 means he will play a crucial role in Britain’s negotiations to leave the EU.
