Independent investigation will look into human rights abuses in Yemen

UN decision is compromise after Saudi Arabia fends off full-scale international commission of inquiry

The UN has agreed to set up an independent investigation into all alleged abuses of human rights in Yemen by all sides in the three-year civil war.

The decision by the UN human rights council is a setback for Saudi Arabia, although the kingdom – a key participant in the conflict – has fended off a full-scale UN international commission of inquiry that could have led to referrals to the international criminal court.

The terrorist cell which killed 14 people in Catalonia on Thursday was planning to mount a bombing attack in Barcelona that was only abandoned when they accidentally blew up the house where they were stockpiling explosives.

Thirteen people were killed and more than 130 injured after a white Fiat van ploughed along Las Ramblas in the Catalan capital on Thursday. Teargas, cold, no toilets: plight of refugees in Calais revealed

As woods in northern France once again house hundreds of people, many report police aggression and sparse supplies

The woods around Calais and Dunkirk have once again become home to more than 1,000 refugees and migrants living in dire conditions without access to toilets, running water, showers or shelter.

Police regularly confiscate sleeping bags, bedding and possessions, and refugees complain that CS spray is often used during early morning raids on people sleeping. Reports of police harassment of refugees have risen as officials from both towns attempt, without success, to stop refugees from settling in the area.

Macron helps France become world leader in soft power, survey finds

President’s election has helped French unseat US and Britain at top of index measuring nations’ global influence

France has overtaken the US and Britain as the world’s top soft power, according to an annual survey examining how much non-military global influence an individual country wields.

Britain headed the list two years ago, but was edged off top spot by the US last year. However, the election of Donald Trump, the Brexit vote and the election of Emmanuel Macron appear to have shifted global perceptions.
