Hundreds of people have fled west Mosul during a lull in fighting but many had to leave behind family members buried in the remains of their former homes

Covered in dust, their hands raw from digging, Ali Assad and his cousin made a desperate choice – to leave their family under the rubble of their west Mosul home and flee while they still could.

The two men were among hundreds to be evacuated on Sunday, during a lull in the fighting prompted by outrage over the high civilian toll caused by multiple airstrikes that have battered the city and its trapped population over the past eight days.

White House says talks continue between president and Paul Ryan as Trump mocks conservatives for being insufficiently anti-abortion in blocking measure

The White House claimed talks between Donald Trump and House speaker Paul Ryan were ongoing on Friday as the Republican effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act stood on the verge of defeat.

Earlier the White House had insisted there would be a vote at 3.30pm, but moments after that deadline slipped by, reports began to emerge that Trump had asked for the vote to be pulled. Ryan was due to hold a press conference at 4pm.

Vladimir Putin’s spokesman dismisses claims that Moscow is linked to the killing of Kremlin critic who left Russia last year and renounced citizenship

A former Russian MP who had fled to Ukraine was shot dead on a busy street in central Kiev on Thursday.

Denis Voronenkov, who had spoken out against Vladimir Putin and Kremlin policies, was shot three times outside the upmarket Premier Palace hotel.
