Turkish president holds talks in St Petersburg with Russian counterpart, thanking him for support in wake of last month’s coup attempt

A meeting between and is under way in St Petersburg, the first since the two leaders fell out over the Russian fighter jet downed by the Turkish air force last November. The Russian president received his Turkish counterpart on Tuesday afternoon as both leaders attempt to put the bad blood of the past nine months behind them.

It is Erdoğan’s first visit abroad since the failed coup attempt in last month, and in his opening remarks he thanked Putin for his support. “Your call straight after the coup was very pleasing for me and our leadership and our people,” said the Turkish president.
